Group excursion to the high alpine research station Jungfraujoch

The Astrodust yearly excursion was this year to the high alpine research station Jungfraujoch.

by Caroline Keufer-Platz

Early in the morning, we left by train to arrive around noon at 3463 meter above sea level where we were kindly welcomed by the custodians Daniela and Erich. They guided us on a tour through the research station, starting from the location where scientists reside, to the mechanical workshop and the library, then via the "antique" wooden elevator towards the Sphinx with many experiments a.o. on galactic cosmic rays and air pollution, meteo observations, and a visit into the dome of the decommissioned telescope.

After the tour we found just enough time to visit the more touristic places including crossing the highest alpine karst cave (Jochloch), the Eispalast, a view on the platform outside and finally we made our way home via a long journey in a variety of trains. Lucky with the weather, and impressed by the many facets of research done at the research station, the Astrodusters came home tired but satisfied and inspired from a great day in fresh air.
